Albert Francis Exner

Albert Francis Exner, age 87, passed away peacefully on February 1 at his daughter's home in Bel Air, MD. Al was born July 10, 1928 in Philadelphia, PA, to the late Albert Michael Exner and Cathryne Barbara (Koob) Exner.

Al missed the WWII draft by 10 days, but enlisted in the Army Reserve, where he proudly served until he was honorably discharged June 9, 1952. Al was a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, majoring in Industrial Engineering. His career took him to Pittsburgh, Chicago, Delaware, West Virginia, and finally Maryland.

Al was very active in his church as a Eucharistic Minister and member of the Holy Name Society, and was passionate about human rights. He was active in the Civil Rights movement in the early 1960's, taking his wife and children on marches when it wasn't popular to do so. Al and Jane were also advocates of immigrant rights and social justice. In later years Al was equally passionate about the Right to Life movement, and was an active leader in his community to promote Life.

Al was happily married to Jane (Tweed) Exner for 50 years and 2 days, until she predeceased him in 2001. Al and Jane leave behind their ten children; Rusty Exner of North Carolina; Philip Exner and wife Sue, of Colorado; Theresa Exner McCarry and husband Charles, of New York; Anne Moran and her husband Dan, of Pennsylvania; Jane Exner , of Bel Air; Ginny Chaplin and husband Greg, of Maine; Geri Bishop and husband Rick, of Bel Air; Cathy Wehland and husband Bob, of Bel Air; Clare Mejia and husband Jose, of Forest Hill; and Ellie Lewis and husband Jimmy, of Bel Air. Mr. Exner was the proud grandfather of 36, and great-grandfather of 9. In addition to his parents and first wife, he was predeceased by his daughter-in-law Anne (Myers) Exner. Al wed Marie (Neuberger) Exner in 2005, and he shared many memorable years with her in Maryland and Florida. He is survived by his sister, Jacqueline Webster. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Paige (Tweed) McGuire and Mary (O'Brien) Tweed and his brother-in-law, Joe Thornton, as well as, a host of nieces and nephews.
