ALBERT “AL” J. BLAND, age 87, of Bel Air, died at the Perry Point VA Hospital, Perry Point, MD on August 20, 2003. Born in Toronto, Canada, he was the son of the late John and Grace Helen Boxall Bland. He served his country in the U.S. Air Force during WW II and retired as a Master Sergeant. He was a P.O.W. for 3 ½ years and was a participant and survivor of the Bataan Death March. He was awarded the Prisoner of War Medal by President Reagan, in person, on June 24, 1988. He was also awarded the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Shriner Boumi Temple, the Masons #153 Linwood, New Jersey, a past president of the Harford County P.T.A., a past National Commander of the American Ex-Prisoners of War, a V.F.W. Commander in Joppa, MD, and a past Grand Tall Cedar.
Mr. Bland is survived by his wife for 58 years, Alberta Fairbrothers Bland; three daughters, Alberta B. Bernstein of Bel Air; Louise B. Winney of Fairfax, Virginia; Susan B. Dilworth of Joppatowne, MD; and seven grandchildren, Jason A. Winney of Larime, Wyoming; Alex J. Bernstein of Bel Air; William J. Winney of Larime, Wyoming; Gary W. Dilworth, Jr. of Joppa, MD; Grant A. Bernstein of Bel Air, MD; Caroline M. Dilworth of Joppa, MD; and Andrew J. Winney of Harlingen, Texas.
