Agatha Damico, a devoted wife, mother, grand and great-grandmother, died Friday at Gilcrist Hospice Care. She was 96.
Agatha was one of six children born to Mary and Sorow Scarito in Bayonne, New Jersey. Agatha loved learning from an early age, studying shorthand and typing in high school. At the age of 17, Agatha began working at Macy's Department Store in New York City wrapping packages. Agatha then began her career as a secretary on Wall Street where her daily commute began on a train from 33rd Street in Bayonne, to the ferry, and finally the subway to Wall Street. After getting married and starting her family, Agatha worked at Manpower in Red Bank, NJ as a secretary.
Agatha met John ("Jack") Damico through a high school friend and they married in 1941, living in Jersey City, NJ for the next 10 years. In 1951, Agatha and Jack, moved to Fair Haven, NJ where they enjoyed spending summers at Elliott's Beach Club in Sea Bright. For many years, Agatha was an active member at The Church of the Nativity where she enjoyed singing in the choir. Agatha was always deeply devoted to her family and enjoyed sharing her love of the beach with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In 1983, Agatha treated her entire family to a Bermuda holiday, where her grandchildren learned to snorkel in Tobacco Bay......a wonderful and lasting memory for all! In 1996 Agatha and Jack moved closer to family and resided for the next 20 years at OakCrest Village in Parkville, Md. Agatha and Jack enjoyed this new chapter, making many new lovely friends and being surrounded by family. Agatha shared her love for others by volunteering for 10 years at Gilchrist Hospice Care, where she resided for the last six weeks of her life.
Agatha is survived by her sisters Veronica and Genie; her children Chrystie (Pat)Goles, Jack (Becky), Greg (Desiree), Don (Mary); her grandchildren Chris, John, Jennifer, Michael, Greg, Lacey, Gregory, Paul, and Ali; and great-grandchildren Nick, Alex, Sonee, Magda, Lila, Luca, and Demi. Agatha was preceded in death by her husband Jack, siblings Ted, Joe, and Rose, and grandchildren Jeff and Nicole.
